Clean Transit Pioneer Secures $34.6M to Scale Electric Bus Fleet Across Urban Corridors

The push toward zero-emission mass transit is gaining unprecedented momentum. An EV transit startup backed by prominent private equity firms has closed a $34.6 million (INR 330 crore) equity funding round led by an international impact fund to accelerate the deployment of approximately 4,500 electric buses currently in its pipeline.

Headquartered in Mumbai, the mobility platform aims to expand its operational footprint to over 5,000 electric buses across 105 cities nationwide.

“Our focus is firmly on disciplined execution, elevating service quality, and ensuring our operating model evolves alongside our growing scale and technical complexity,” stated the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. “This fresh equity gives us extended runway to execute our rollout strategy while upholding the reliability, operational efficiency, and rider experience that define our brand.”

Transforming Mass Public Transport Through Scaled Operations

Founded in 2019, the enterprise specializes in deploying and operating electric buses for public transit systems. Rather than manufacturing vehicles in-house, the firm utilizes contract manufacturing agreements with vehicle OEMs, subsequently placing the buses into service across intercity routes and intracity municipal corridors.

The startup—which functions as a portfolio venture of a major climate management group—currently manages an active fleet exceeding 1,200 vehicles. This includes 900 intracity transit buses, 300 intercity coaches operating under its consumer brand, and 50 dedicated units servicing regional state transport corporations. To power these operations, the business has built a supporting grid of more than 270 high-capacity charging stations.

This latest round builds upon prior capital raises, including a $37 million investment from the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, along with backing from global development funds and institutional financiers.

Institutional Investors Shift Focus to Operational Platforms

Historically, financing in the green mass transit sector has relied on development financial institutions funding vehicle purchases tied to long-term government concessions. This fresh equity injection signals a key shift in investor mindset—moving beyond asset-level financing to back scalable, operational platforms capable of managing complex transport logistics.

Scaling mass electric transit requires capital allocation not just for rolling stock, but for depot infrastructure, charging grids, and technology-driven operations management.

This momentum reflects a broader wave of private equity activity in the heavy EV space. Earlier this year, a leading electric commercial vehicle maker and its platform subsidiary finalized a $310 million investment deal with a global private equity giant to expand its regional footprint, followed closely by a confidential IPO filing—underscoring strong institutional confidence in the long-term viability of electrified public transportation.
